Clinical and virological characteristics of calves experimentally infected with a Brazilian isolate of bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1a Ciência Rural
Quadros,Luana Marchi; Jardim,José Conrado dos Santos; Merchioratto,Ingryd; Brum,Mário Celso Sperotto.
ABSTRACT: To study the pathogenicity of the Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) type 1a 241.10 isolate, four calves were intranasally inoculated with a viral suspension containing 107.2 TCID50 mL-1. One calf was left uninoculated and kept in contact with the other calves to investigate viral transmissibility. After inoculation, the animals were monitored daily for clinical signs of infection. The presence of the virus in the blood and nasal secretions was confirmed by virus isolation in cell culture. White blood cells were quantified prior to and every 3 days after infection, and the presence of antibodies was checked every 7 days, starting at day 0 until day 42 post-inoculation (pi). After infection, nasal and ocular serous secretions were...

DETECCIÓN DE PESTIVIRUS POR REVERSO TRANSCRIPCIÓN ACOPLADA A REACCIÓN EN CADENA DE LA POLIMERASA DE LA REGIÓN 5' cDNA NO TRADUCIDA Rev Salud Anim.

Infoteca-e
PELLEGRIN, A. O.; SERENO, J. R. B.; LEITE, R. C.; FIGUEIREDO, H. C. P..
A doenca causa problemas...

Neurological disorder associated with pestivirus infection in sheep in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Pescador,Caroline Argenta; Corbellini,Luis Gustavo; Driemeier,David; Gonçalves,Ricardo Kalil; Cruz,Cláudio Estêvão Farias.
A two-month-old lamb showing signs of severe neurological disease characterized by muscular tremors, hypermetria, and motor incoordination was submitted to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. At necropsy, the major findings were a marked reduction of the size of the cerebellum and bilateral dilatation of the lateral ventricles. Microscopically, areas of cellular disorganization in the cerebellar cortex, reduction of the granular layer of cerebellum associated with decreased density of cells, and the presence of large cytoplasmic vacuoles in the molecular layer were observed. Neurons of the gray matter of the brain and macrophages of the mesenteric lymph nodes stained positively by the...

Serum neutralization as a differential serological test for classical swine fever virus and other pestivirus infections Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Paredes,J.C.M.; Oliveira,E.A.S.; Oliveira,L.G.; Rosa,J.C.A.; Roehe,P.M..
Serum neutralization tests (SN) were performed against classical swine fever virus (CSFV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and border disease virus (BDV) on samples of swine serum collected for screening of antibodies to CSFV, in order to determine the SN value as a differential serological test. Ninety-nine sera out of a sample of 16,664 were positive for antibodies to pestiviruses in an ELISA test which did not distinguish antibodies to different pestiviruses. When submitted to SN, 81 sera were positive for CSFV antibodies only. In 17 sera, crossreactive antibodies to either CSFV, BVDV or BDV were detected. In most of these sera (13 out of 17) the differences between SN titres against the three viruses were not sufficient to estimate which was the...

Use of homologous recombination in yeast to create chimeric bovine viral diarrhea virus cDNA clones BJM
Arenhart,Sandra; Silva Junior,José Valter Joaquim; Flores,Eduardo Furtado; Weiblen,Rudi; Gil,Laura Helena Vega Gonzales.
Abstract The open reading frame of a Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) strain, IBSP4ncp, was recombined with the untranslated regions of the reference NADL strain by homologous recombination in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, resulting in chimeric full-length cDNA clones of BVDV (chi-NADL/IBSP4ncp#2 and chi-NADL/IBSP4ncp#3). The recombinant clones were successfully recovered, resulting in viable viruses, having the kinetics of replication, focus size, and morphology similar to those of the parental virus, IBSP4ncp. In addition, the chimeric viruses remained stable for at least 10 passages in cell culture, maintaining their replication efficiency unaltered. Nucleotide sequencing revealed a few point mutations; nevertheless, the phenotype of the rescued...
